Hey ya'll! Thank you for stopping by to check out my blog! My name is Jess (or Jessie) and I live in Kernersville, North Carolina! I was born and raised in Long Island, New York, but moved to NC around 5 years ago. When I first moved here I swore I would NEVER say the word ya'll, and well, you can see how well that turned out!
Growing up I knew I wanted out of the suburbs, and wanted nothing more than to move somewhere where there were open fields and farm animals. I never thought it would happen, but it turns out that my path was already set for me.
I moved here originally for my boyfriend Evan. We actually met through family friends. My uncle and aunt moved here years before ever hearing the name Evan. Then, my grandparents moved here. When I came to visit them, my aunt and uncles friends introduced Evan and I and we hit it off immediately. We dated for 2 years long distance before I decided I would move here, BUT, only if I got a job. I sent out resume after resume to any school in the surrounding areas of his hometown that I could find. FINALLY I got a call for an interview, so I booked a flight and I was off. I bought a pant suit, wore heels and went to the interview and.......... it went horrible. I left the interview feeling defeated and thought I would be stuck in NY forever.
So I drove off from the interview in tears, headed towards my grandparents condo. I cried to my grandparents about how horrible my interview went and my papa ensured me everything would be alright. He then proceeded to show me a newspaper listing for a 5th grade math position at an up and coming charter school. I thought it was crazy, but I called up, and got an interview for that afternoon. I gathered myself and headed off. When I got there, I interviewed in a church, which I would later fund out was just their temporary placement until their new school was built. About half-way through the interview I found out that they were looking for a first grade teacher, and not a fifth grade teacher. I was ecstatic. I had dreamt about teaching first grade since I was in first grade with my favorite teacher ; Ms. Castle.
The next day, I was called by Mrs. Heath, and was offered a job. Andddd the rest is history!
To this day, I cannot be more thankful for my failed first interview, and my papa's love for reading the newspaper. My school has been a true blessing. I have enjoyed every year teaching there, and now my sister has even made the move from NY to NC and teaches third grade at my school!
I am a believer in fate, fun, and weirdness. And thankfully my fate brought me to a school where I am able to express ME! Everyday I try my best to engage my students in learning, and teach them that being different and weird is what they are meant to do!
